After spending 20 years in the game as a hip hop DJ and producer, relatively new to the house scene is Frenchman Sebb Aston. Now living in Malaga the newcomer is fast building a reputation for churning out deep and groove-ridden, serotonin boosters. The transition from 88 to 120 beats per minute appears to have been as smooth as the vocal cuts in ‘Life Goes On’ but this isn’t necessarily surprising given the shared ancestry that the two musical disciplines share.
He made the switch in 2011 and has already seen a measured success with releases bathing in support from the likes of Jamie Jones, Hot Since 82, Miguel Migs and Amine Edge with a raft of releases on imprints like Love Not Money, Blue Orb Records and Savoire Faire Music. It’s fair to say 2013 was a good year for the lad.
2014 has seen Sebb launched his Frigo Vide this year and hot on the heels of Alex Bassosten’s ‘Squeeze’ EP and Sebb’s own EP, ‘Feel So High’, latest release ‘Life Goes On’ is the best yet. Title track Life Goes On is a steady side-to-sider with plenty of swing and a looping vocal over the phlegmatic bassline. Euphoric tones prod and rouse the break and build for the main drop and bring some much needed sunshine vibes as we edge closer to spring.
Also included in the release are ‘I Can’t Wait’, ‘She Smiles’ and ‘Hold Me Down’. I Can’t Wait carries on the in the vein of the title track with vocal loops over an assured bassline with an added layer of rimshot. She Smiles is a more hype cut on the EP. With syncopated synth hits and swirling, intangible, vocal textures, Sebb is proving that he has the sonic repertoire to slot in nicely in his new musical surroundings.
Hold Me Down is deeper and darker and has a G-house tint to it with a pitched-down, squelching bass. The different tone to the other tracks means Hold Me Down adds a great balance to the EP and broadens its appeal. There’s no runt of this litter with each of the tracks doing their bit on a solid release.
The Life Goes On EP is out exclusively on Beatport on the 3rd of Feb with the general release coming later in the month.
