Released towards the end of last month, the new ‘Cosmos’ EP from San Holo has been getting a fair bit of play in the office lately and for good reason too. Following his debut on Heroic with his single ‘Hiding’ (feat. The Nicholas) and an appearance on Point Point’s ‘Filet Mignon’ compilation; future beats/trap connoisseur San Holo has dropped his second release for Heroic entitled the ‘Cosmos’ EP.
On his new EP San Holo puts scattering vocal clips and well placed drum work with underlying layers of sweeping bass and synths. From start to finish ‘Cosmos’ straddles innovation on several levels, yet still retains a smooth and moreish texture. Having already gathered support from the likes of GANZ, Diplo & Friends, Yellow Claw, Mightyfools, Deon Custom and GRMM (who also represents on remix duty). the release just as well suited to dancing in the club as it is for those solitary, chin-scratching headphones moments.
Opening with ‘Welcome’, which leads in with the sort of jaunty glistening synths that wouldn’t be amiss in a Hudson Mohawke track, the EP opens on a elevating tone with a syncopated kick drum leading it forward. Following track ‘Fly’ incorporates a more energetic, winding beat with soaring vocal samples echoing the refrain “we’re going to fly” over euphoric synth pads: purring rhythmically over another weighty, syncopated kick drum.
‘Memories’ is a more chilled out, ambient track which leads us into the more reflective side of electronica – as perhaps is suggested by the title. Gentle melodics trickle over swelling strings, but the intricate drum patterns beneath and short trap-style vocal interjections keep things fresh and in tone with the rest of the release. Closing on ‘Hiding’, which features The Nicholas on vocals, the EP spins back into a more energetic zone as the tempo is picked up on the finishing track.
