Review: Summer Chapter w/ Tale of Us, Marcel Dettmann

The Rainbow Venues has been at the heart of the Midlands club scene for years now. A sprawling complex that takes in big raw spaces, more intimate clubs, terraces, gardens and more, it excelled itself once again this past weekend with The Summer Chapter. This was another fine gathering that brought plenty of cult names to the second city for a night of madness.

The crowd are a happy crew of people who clearly known their onions. They dress in black quite often and have probably seen the headlines here play in Berlin, where so much techno gets made. In fact, if techno is your thing, then Saturday was the time you need to be in Brum with local crew Blackout owning the night with one of the heroes of the genre, Marcel Dettmann, playing.

He is well known as a resident at Berghain and brought with him a fat and heavy, chunky rolling sound that made perfect sense in room one. The beats were fulsome and the hi hats crisp and those in attendance sweat it out throughout the set.

As he pumped the air occasionally, the crowd match him with extras and really egged him on. Technically proficient and full of unusual selections and unknown tracks, Dettmann really is one of the best in the techno world for good reason. Both girls and boys of all ages lapped up his set and the vibe was of the sort that really makes for a memorable night.

Classy red lighting added to the atmosphere and before him Italian duo Tale of Us also impressed with their moody set of cool black beats. Often build gnat teasing for minutes on end, they had the crowd really in raptures. This was a true journey that really took you places. In between the two sets, Walking With Kings also won over the crowd with their heartfelt selections and real skills in the booth. They mixed perfectly and sequenced even better and all in all this made for a perfect techno experience from start to end.
