The week before last we premiered a new remix of Bunty’s feel good and addictive track ‘We Are Here’ from Clap! Clap! aka Cristiano Crisci. Catching our attention with her lush vocals, accompanied by tribalistic drum work and tasty synth interjections, we felt compelled to let you in on the wonder that is Bunty Looping.
A beatboxer as well as a vocalist for a number of mixed-genre groups, Brighton-based Bunty is a very talented lady with a strong creative vision. Eager to learn more about her, we thought we’d get together for a chat. Check out the interview below to see what went down!
Hi Bunty! To introduce yourself, can you tell us your name, where you’re from and how you’d describe your sound?
Helloooo my name is Kassia Mazal Zermon and I am a North African Jew gal from West London.
Sound like a hyperactive race through space via the pound shop to nick the toy record I saw in the window…
Who are your musical influences?
MJ , all the old soul legends , terrible 90s pop hits ( all goes in there – not strictly under my control) Aphex, Laurie Anderson, Andy Kaufman, Kraftwerk, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory ( the old film) , Morrocan wedding music, Linos Wengara, King tubby, Beck, Steve Reich, J dilla, madlib, Mugam music, Thelonius monk, Fela, any acapella music I hear and all the music I heard on the radio when I was lucky enough to be in The Sudan last year.
You’re such a multi-talented artist, with your new album ‘Multimos’ coming out soon can you tell us what sort of thing to expect from it?
Well, a totally pyschedelic multimedia journey of a live show with dancers, a lot of helium and the chance to join my improv choir a part of each show! Oh and a handmade light show ! and Incredible visuals from VJ and artist @metaLuna
Tell us more… Is there a central concept behind ‘Multimos’?
Multimos is a place you should go that is bendy. There are seven special powers to collect there. Maximity, flexibility, passion, motivation, adventure and multiplicity. You should know that in this place inhabits an all seeing headless (some say many headed- but no-one knows because he is only heard – never seen) overseer or Lord of play called King Zacky. You will probs meet at the show.
Is there going to be a tour we can look forward to?
Yes ! Being booked as we speak – UK wide in the spring .
You’ve performed alongside the likes of Beardyman, Scoobius Pip as well as playing with UK dub outfit The Resonators, renegade electro collective Beatabet and folk song trio Le Juki. Tell us about the greatest show you’ve ever played.
I’d say one of the greatest shows was at the Notting Hill Carnival – Notting Hill Carnival is like my mecca. So it blew ma mind to play at it ….for people who don’t know it’s a heavy heavy bass womb of deep dub to trance out to. London at it’s best. A fucking human feat.
If you could only take one album on to a desert island, what would it be?
Shit, only one? Um maybe one I hadn’t yet heard but is a classic that I’d been meaning to listen to for years.
What are you listening to at the moment?
Quite a bit of Gnawa music – really cool rhythms.
Do you have any tips for artists to watch out for over the coming months?
Abraham Moughrabi is smashing it and about to play live a lot more, Strings Of Peace (Jari James’s project) – EPIC! Dizraeli and the small gods are in the process of blitzing their new album and my cuz Son of Kick – deep shit.
Do you have anything lined up after the launch of your album?
I’m a bit hyperactive so there are a lot of albums and projects and collaborations waiting to happen next – however planning on touring the show with the new AV ensemble I have put together as much as poss for a bit.
Thanks for taking the time to talk to us! Any final shout outs or words of wisdom?
Thank YOU. I’d like to give a massive big up to Battersea Arts centre for providing time, space and support to finish the live show. Also a general shout out – sending out big love. Wisdom words? Well I recently heard that some tribe in Papua New Guinea said that out of all the things we have developed in the West the only thing they would take on and think is useful is Gaffa tape – HA!
‘Congatron’, the first single release from Bunty’s forthcoming album ‘Multimos’, is out now with Clap! Clap!’s remix of ‘We Are Here’ on the flip. You can pick up your own copy here.
