Here’s one that has slipped under most people’s radar, but is deserved of being brought back up, seen as it will soon be the case that we’re all beckoned with every single website, blog and forum’s “Top 100 of 2014”, we bring you a strong case of one that will be in the top spots.
The Swedish duo of Jonatan Nilsson & Ludvig Stolterman aka Gidge, dropped their debut album on heavily praised AtomNation back in September, the result was the phenomenal ‘Autumn Bells’. From the first track ‘Fauna, Part 1’ you’re immediately evaporated into a dreamscape of high mountaintops and crystal clear air, a tone of well crafted music ensues.
This album isn’t for the bubbled EDM enthusiasts, they’d be lost 7 minutes into ‘Dusk’, wondering when the “sick beat is going to drop”. It is however for the growing ensembles of newer music fans that have grown up with many different tastes to please, the ones that have expatriated from differing social-medias and have eclectic tastes because of the plethora on offer, in a world where the internet is ruling the roost.
There’s moments in this album that are haunting and deep like when the keys from ‘I Fell In Love’ come in, there’s ‘Fauna Part 2’ which revisits the ethereal and sonic landscapes it touched on in the opening instalment, shifting from pine trees to the sky with pulsing rhythm.
Having many highlights, every time you play this album, something new comes from each listen, you notice different sounds, you have different thoughts, it’s altogether mesmerising and beautiful, and it’s that that goes past the faltering “best of” lists, and tips ‘Autumn Bells’ straight into the stratosphere of art that stands against time.
‘Norrland’ has been hammered by fans all over, myself included, and is one of many reasons it has been repeatedly on play since its release, it suits to be the stunning finale to what is a masterpiece, the horns trickling through signalling the end of ‘Autumn’ and the coming of ‘Winter’.
Go check them out and you can even grab Gidge’s EP – For Seoul for free of their Bandcamp
