Blasting off today, Bristol based electronic DJ/producer Distro has dropped one of the moodiest, hi-octane EPs of the year via Roska Kicks and Snares.
Distro brings his bass-o-matic, power-tracks to RKS and fans of his 2013 Bear Fresh release, ‘City Life’, will know exactly what to expect as he cooks up another muscular, double-barrelled EP laden with narsty UK garage and bass over deep, 4×4 house beats.
Little is known about the artist himself. He remains low key as he carves his path through these first few releases, nevertheless, the tracks speak enough for themselves. The distinctive character of the beats and bass he’s fashioned thus far are enough to see him stand out in the crowd with live and heavy jams due to hit dancefloors near you from tonight.
Title track ‘Thug Girl’ is pure energy. A bastard hybrid of early ‘00s UKG and raw, late 00’s, dubstep cuts. A crisp beat dissects the flabby bass switch-ups with precision. Caspa-like rolls, subs and wobbles hyped by G’d-up MC licks will no doubt demand wheelies at man likes EZ’s next sets. This is where UK bass, garage and house crossover so effectively and Distro blends the different sonic ingredients like an alchemist; making gold from base elements.
At first you might be forgiven for thinking ‘Deep Down’ takes a softer approach but all hopes of a respite are rudely cast aside after the intro quickly dissolves into a rolling sub-track. Bass tones, in-and-around the mid-range that swell, pulse and whinney underneath the bright, synth bell notes.
The perfect EP to start the week with if you’re nursing some acute Monday blues. A re-imagining of real old school bass music, which for us at TNG is more a renaissance but for some of you fresh-faced, rave recruits, this might be the first time you’ve ever heard meat like this – bar maybe the usual same old tracks that roll around on a ‘Pure Garage’ compilation year-on-year.
