At the beginning of the month Darq E Freaker dropped his latest release, the monstrous ‘Minger’ / ‘Yeah Yeah Yeah (Dun Know)’, with Glaswegian label and club-collective Numbers.
With a reputation for bold, kaleidoscopic dance productions Darq E Freaker slots in well with the general tone of a label who count Rustie, Moska and Jamie XX on their roster of artists. Over the years Numbers have veered between releases of hyper-colour beats, straight up techno and house, and the sounds of the negligibly entitled ‘future garage.’ What they have always provided consistently, however, is a fresh and inventive flavor of club music.
A-side ‘Minger’ is a racing, ferocious explosion of up-tempo grime, bass and breaks. Opening with a haunting and ominous synth line, the track blows up into a cacophony of sound that spirals into madness – drops – and then proceeds to start all over again. Seizing on the seemingly-innocuous childhood taunt ‘minger’ as a title, Freaker in fact channels a lot of terror and anxiety into the track, which is further developed upon in the accompanying and suitably ‘minging’ grindhouse-style video: think guts, blood, strippers and maggots. This is an in-your-face belter that is both abrasive and genius in equal measure.
B-Side ‘Yeah Yeah Yeah (Dun Know)’ is, on the other hand, a bit of a creeper. The tune opens with a few sparse elements – just drums, vocals, and a winding synth – before Darq E Freaker builds upon and expands it with a woozy, eighties-sounding boogie melody and some wiry, disturbing mids; turning the track into a winding and mesmerizing cacophony of hazey purple bass. Selected for the B-side, ‘Yeah Yeah Yeah’ is inherently the more meditative of the two tracks, however Freaker still gets across an intensely dark and trippy, almost fearful, vibe with his production.
