We have to say, there is so much good music coming out of Germany at the moment! One fine example is Romanian-born and Freiburg-based DJ/producer Borrowed Identity and his recently released ‘Feeling Blue’ EP.
As his moniker affirms, Borrowed Identity’s musical creations stem from a mixed bag of influences. Having made everything from classical to ambient, house to techno, experimental to electro as well as hip hop and pop music, his catalogue is varied; however as a political refugee his name also speaks of identity displacement on a deeper level.
The producer has had a very busy 2014 thus far, gathering support from the likes of Mike Huckaby, Move D, Delano Smith and Detroit Swindle amongst others. He’s brought out two wicked 12″ EP’s for Quintesentials and Fina Records, entitled ‘Sexo Bonito’ and ‘Bang Bang Boogie’ respectively, and ‘Sexo Bonito’ track ‘Shake’ has been a top scorer in Resident Advisor’s chart (an achievment that seems to be regular made by Borne Identity nowadays).
The title and opening track ‘Feeling Blue’ provides a skilled lesson in melodic beats and rhythmic chord work; starting the EP off as it means to go on, which is full pelt ahead. Borrowed Identity makes no secret of the fact that his musical influences come from all over and the range on this EP is another thing worth noting.
A little bit of Detroit comes around by the time ‘One Nation Under A Groove’ is in full swing, this generation rules the nation. ‘Nothing Or All’ is another quality deep track, with some quirky little hip hop scratching samples jammed in there as the lush vocals float over the beat. This EP is jam packed with audible goodness.
Personally, I would have to say that the killer track on this is the EP’s final track ‘Searching Forever’. It does exactly what it says on the tin: the track begins awash with this driving beat, that goes on and on, so by the time the vocals come in you’re wrapped around, and around, and the love holds, around and around. Rather hypnotising if you ask me!
Feeling Blue’ is out now through Home Taping Is Killing Music, take a listen to the preview below and if you’re digging it pick up your own copy here. What’s more, Borrowed Identity has just been featured and done a mix for Vice’s Thump imprint, and also put forward some wicked remixes (try his belting remix of Anaxander’s Hesitations and Doubts), so if you can’t get enough we suggest you hit these up too!
