REVIEW: ONYX at Space Ibiza w/ Ben Sims, Rebekah, Dave Clarke + more

Another week in Ibiza means another firing Onyx party at Space. This is the mega club’s last ever season after many years of leading from the front so that is lending every party and extra special edge. For this one on August 8th, Ben Sims and Dave Clarke, Rebekah and the lady behind all this, Mikaela, all step up.

As we enter the main room we are hit by the size of the place. It is vast, with exploded industrial elements up top, massive speaker stacks all around us and cubed spaces with dancers hidden behind plastic. Blasts of smoke fill the club and add to the disorientating feel once the music gets hard and dark at peak time.

Ben Sims steps up to a big reaction, with people from all over Europe as well as many locals all punching the air. Th along time UK veteran plays exclusively tonight and is not often here so it is a real great booking. He is a technically amazing DJ with rare skills across his CDJs. He mixes quick and slick in style, but each transition is smooth and each selection is coherent.

Dave Clarke, the Baron of techno, also impresses. He smashes through a high impact mix of electro and searing techno and takes us on a really white knuckle rude. It sodas punchy and crisp from the great speakers and though everyone is sweaty on the floor, no one leaves.

An unfortunate cancellation means the Sunset Terrace with Mixmag is not as was billed, but no matter, Back in side the set Mikaela serves up is one of her best this season. It is varied and vital and full of real drum led power and precision. Rebekah also kicks  out the jams and really works her gear. She is loved by those on the floor and once again this party was a rare thing in Ibiza – dark and techno focussed with underground vibes all night long.
