Spatial Awareness – Transmissions From A Landlocked Island (Hottwerk Records)
The long-awaited debut album from Spatial Awareness finally lands this week, and it’s pretty damned huge. Having built a solid reputation over the last couple of years with remixes for the somewhat diverse likes of Shaun J Wright & Alinka, Marc Almond, Miaoux Miaoux, and many more, and singles for Hottwerk and other labels like Twirl!, Zombie Soundsystem, and Fetch Records, one might expect wall to wall club tracks; however “Transmissions From A Landlocked Island” is a refreshingly different melting pot of many of the influences from Spatial Awareness’s universe – techno and acid house is of course heavily present in there, but rubbing shoulders with liberal amounts of krautrock, dub, and post punk sounds and textures. A collaboration with old friend and colleague SPLINTrd results in the gorgeous techno of “The Alvian Perception (9.5 Digits)”. Recent single “The Healing Dust” is a colossal dancefloor acid monster; but “Microlife”, for instance, is a sideways, guitar inflected slice of obliquely socially conscious balearica.
As a debut album, this is ambitious, idiosyncratic, flawed, fractured, and all the better for it…. it will almost certainly remain intriguing well into the future.
