Uprise Audio’s Asylum comes forward with ‘Native’, the follow up to his summer smash ‘Always Love’. On this new release we witness a continued display of Asylum’s creative versatility and attention to detail as he expands on his existing talents whilst fine-tuning his unique and established sound.
On ‘Native’ Asylum continues to lock into his signature sound: lacing cinematic elements together with ground-shaking bass production. Having spent ten years in the fold of London D&B collective Vicious Circle before turning his hand to dubstep in 2011, the producer is well-schooled when it comes to the inner-workings of bass music.
Since joining forces with Uprise Audio in 2012 he has continually gone from strength, putting out a selection of swelling, deep and meditative club rollers with huge support from DJ’s across the 140 scene. Filled with the rich and dark, forward-thinking beats Asylum has become known for, ‘Native’ utilises fresh drum work patterns and sweeping melodics to construct an immersive and intense atmosphere throughout.
Opening with ‘Things You Don’t Know’, the EP begins sparsely with an ominously ticking hi-hat and kick drum sequence. Slowly filtering in midrange filtered reeses, the atmosphere builds gradually towards the the drop: smacking hard upon arrival. As high pitched vocals lead into a barrage of low end frequencies and savage steppy beats you can see this one sending any dance floor mad. A certified belter, this is one for people who like to feel their music as well as hear it.
On following track ‘Chino’ we see Asylum do what he does best. Putting deep weighty sub bass together with crisp beats and intricate, criss-crossing percussions, the entirety of the track is delivered with a rich, moody intensity. An evolution of his earlier productions, ‘Chino’ retains the reflective tone of his ‘Germinate’ EP whilst also bringing something new to the table: this is the classic Asylum formula with a twist.
Title track ‘Native’ features a sweeping cinematic intro, laced with tribal drum work that expands upon the drop. Propelled forward on a sublime rolling groove, this is a classic Asylum production. A guaranteed head nodder, trademark percussions and melodics take the lead on this one. Closing with the immersive ‘Kill Room’, built on super sonic low frequency vibrations, the final moments of the EP engulf us in purring bass. Haunting vocal clips and sweeping cinematic melodics add the finishing touches to what is certainly a must-have record for any self-respecting bass head.
