Justin Luke – ‘Swarm’

Producer Justin Luke – from the UK, which is shocking considering how exotic his name is – is set to release his new stinging, peak-hour progressive ‘Swarm’, featuring remixes from Massive Kid and Calewill. If you’re looking for an electronic fusion of modern sounds, out July 15th on System Recordings, you’re Justin Luck! Ha… hah hah… haaa.

The original mix begins as a beat, the bare bones of every song, gradually being fleshed out with electronic effects and short, sharp synths as the pace is set to a cool walking speed. It slows, thickened with synths more deep and oscillating and painted with a futuristically tinny tune. Then, as the beats multiply into sets of two and four and six, it breaks into a sprint. The beat neatly makes impact more than dropping, the song detonating and expanding into a pulsating flare of electronic melody. Jaunty and wickedly urban, it seems to bounce off an invisible surface with every beat. Even so, it still carries a sense of incrementum, which holds steady throughout the entirety of the song, just to tease us. That’s Progressive House for you.

The edges of the track are sharpened through the Kid Massive remix, seeming to speed up the descent towards the peak of the song but keeping the fundamentals of the original track intact. The tune is paved with pulsing synths and pounding beats, building and building up to a receding target. Then comes the long-awaited crest of the song, where the beat rests to bask in its riotous glory until reluctantly trickling off into silence.

With a fuller sound, the Calewill remix immediately begins to outshine it’s origin, however the sound is less finely cut and still possesses the same sense of build up. This remix spends less time hanging around and quickly sinks into a chaotic melee of sounds, even equipped with its own tune, eventually pulled thin by an elongated synth. From then on, the similarities between the remix and the original shine through, some of the subtle differences being deeper backbeats and less adorned sounds. This version seems more evenly proportioned, feeding the listener their recommended dose of the good stuff when it’s wanted, not when they’re half-starved. It’s more tailored for restless club goers.
