Gary Beck – ‘Pure Cane Sugar’ EP

Prolific, Glaswegian DJ/producer Gary Beck steps up with four-track, techno slam, ‘Pure Cane Sugar’.

Having dropped EPs on labels like Drumcode and Cocoon in the past, Beck has been busy pushing his own BEK Audio imprint, seeing releases from the likes of Mr. G and Mark Broom. If it wasn’t for the Essential Mix to his name, you’d be tempted to say he was one of the most underrated talents on the circuit but those who know need no reminder of his ability to cook up raw, no-holds-barred techno, with last year’s ‘Video Siren’ a case in point.

The stand-out performer on Beck’s Slam Radio Podcast, Title track ‘Pure Cane Sugar’ is a slice of killer tech with looping samples filling the mix. Rich horns and vocals are given plenty of room thanks to his trademark attention to the high end. Next up ‘Blotch’ is a thug of a track with a hard and airy, thudding kick offset by delightfully, disorientating mind-fuckery, panning left to right.

Third helping on the EP is ‘Hold Up’. Yet another insight into the versatility of the sound that Beck has found for himself. Just as hard as Blotch and just as heavy, Hold Up is a blast of pure energy, begging to be played on a Funktion One setup. Then, just when you thought you’d heard it all comes an acid tech jam in the shape of ‘Gold Badge’. Trippy, intangible vocal tails, a busy rhythm, meandering pulses and relentless drive from the bassline, Gold Badge is the perfect finale to a very strong EP indeed.

Not a red herring in the catch, Pure Sugar Cane is out this month on 12” and digital.
