Rhymos – ‘Pale Ale’ Ep

Finally! Pale ale in tech clubs is now more than a mere thing of fancy thanks to top Whistleblower Rhymos and his super-malty debut on the label. The ‘Pale Ale’ extended player features four bittersweet, acidic grooves currently tearing up the cones on my boom-box.

The prospect of throwing some serious shapes to the title track at the local discotheque with Gary, Keith and the rest of lads has got our amps clipping. ‘Pale Ale’ is a thick slice of 303 straight from the biscuit tin. Words alone cannot explain what wicked demons possessed my little suede sneakers when faced with this musical sex-pest. Side sticks flicker as the frequency of the rasping bass line shifts and twists like two sloths engaged a mindless tug of war with a giant Curly Wurly.

The top track is the dog’s bollocks, but from the get-go ‘Mutton Chops’ is an even saucier little number. Mutton dressed as pure beef, with extra gravy, the second original jam on the EP is the ultimate soundtrack to aggressively pump-up your tyres to. Definitely do not play this round your nan’s. The low, rumbling squelches are sure to totally twist her melon or even likely trigger some unholy colonic evacuation. That exact thing happened to our Gary last week on a late-night poppers binge. Like all good music this moody little trooper is best played loud, in tight jeans, with the lights off.

‘Pampa Michu’ is not a Pokémon. In fact it’s a track inspired by uber-spiritual Peruvian natives, according to my exceptional detection skills. The bass on this mystical bad boy made the hairs of my beard go all tingly and was shamefully arousing. Still equipped with acidic, modulatory arpeggiation, Pampa Michu differs from its pals in that the low end is dominated by mean, unearthly, elongated bass notes. Headphone use is not recommended as it can cause extreme zone-outs.

Aubrey chips in with a remix of Pale Ale which is the purest, most beautiful brain fuck I’ve heard in a while. This hot banana had me like Toto, swirling in a techno tornado in the less-than-salubrious East-side of Oz. It’s like an intense blast of salvia, injected straight through your jug-holes, except it’s also pretty frecken’ awesome.

Rhymos’ Pale Ale EP is out on April 4th courtesy of the lovely shorts and skirts at Whistleblower Records.
