Tributes paid to local house hero

Tributes have poured in for a popular house music DJ and former record shop owner who has died after a short illness, while on the verge of widespread acclaim.

Peter Ryan from Darlington, UK, was well known during the 80s and 90s when he was a resident DJ for dance events at the nightclub Lucy’s, and sold vinyl records from his shop in the town centre. He also performed at events around the world, notching up gigs in Barcelona and Ibiza.

It was Darlington’s very own dance scene in which Peter was most heavily involved, and his fans there credit him with bringing house music to the town, however, in the months leading up to his death, Peter had begun to establish a worldwide reputation and demand for his performances was growing internationally.

In memory of Peter, his friends and fellow DJs Dave Moore and Mike Dowson are planning to set up a recording studio in his name. Pieces of recording equipment that Peter once used to create his own productions will be installed and the facility will be made available to charities and organisations working with underprivileged children.

“He was just starting to make it when he was struck down by this illness,” commented Dave Moore. He was getting recognition, making big money and being put up in five-star hotels. “He was starting to reap the benefit of all those years of hard work.”

Peter’s funeral will be held at 12:30pm on September 17th at St Cuthbert’s Church, Darlington. Hundreds of people are expected to attend.
