Fresh from the ebbing success of his last hit, ‘Miami 82’, the velvet-voiced Estonian has spun another golden song. ‘Bright Lights’ is beautifully sung and overflowing with summer vitality, set in motion through Le7els’ sub-label ICONS. It is not meant for peasant ears until the 17th of June, but the Pete Tong première of the song is available below. If you still need to expel the despondency of the colder months, feast your ears.
The song possesses massive potential. It has the catchiness that attracts the masses, the instrumental quality, the light-hearted tone perfect for the summer optimism, and the confident but modest vocals. Syn Cole’s voice exudes charismatic imperfection, but the overall song is polished and professional-sounding, cut to a fine edge.
The lyrics avoid the generics of pop music – never are the words ‘club’, ‘molly’, or ‘watermelon’ uttered – and, if you actually listen to them, convey a reassuringly certain sense of positivism and hopefulness. This is mirrored by the soft tenor of the non-vocal elements to the song, pitches rising and falling in an almost nostalgic way: making you simultaneously sad and happy through the story actualised before your eyes, moulded by the dream-like lyrics. There is a stabilised mix of instruments, with guitar riffs, muted drums that increase in stress as the song progresses, and tasteful electronic elements. I can’t fault it.
Reminiscent of beat masters like Avicii, the apex of the song is a deluge of spirited, tireless, leaping sounds that are focused around a sanguine tune instead of collapsing into a flood of beats like many songs do in order to make the beat drop starkly. this contrasts pleasantly with the relative softness of the verses, a method often employed by the professionals of the industry. Basically, Syn Cole has created a track tailor made for the charts, it just depends on whether it’s given the chance it deserves or not.
