Fresh on the heels of collaborative indie dance effort ‘Joy’ from Sugar Hill, Wasabi and Hawaiian Boy, Tropical Heat hit us with something completely different in the form of Detlef’s tech-house refix.
The Greek is on the verge of big things since signing for Steve Lawlor’s Viva Music and having already seen releases on Be As One, Material Series and Starlight Unlimited since making his debut in 2010.
You might be familiar with his remix of Hector Couto’s 2013 cut ‘Who’s Back’ and his own original mix of ‘Daxx’ that dropped in November.
Detlef’s ‘Joy’ puts on an underground spin with pitched-down distortions of the original vocals. The result is a deep and determined, late night tech groove. Cue the strobe lights and smoke for the breakdown, as a canned snare builds out of the slurring vocals to that raw, house bass and drum and hypnotic rhythm that drops with a portmento’d klaxon. The intangible vocal whirls are the bed beneath the laidback lyrics.
This is a prime example of the talent Steve Lawlor is overseeing at Viva Warriors. Deep, groove-heavy tech and house at the top of the underground. It might only be a one track-release but still trust us this one is worth a listen; ready for the record box.
Detlef has a big schedule lined up with a string of spring performances. You can catch him in the UK with appearances including Birmingham’s Next Door alongside Darius Syrossian in March and Sankeys, Manchester at the tail-end of next month.
