Berlin-based Sidney Charles, who has garnered a fair bit of attention in recent months with smash tech house releases on Material and 8Bit, is to get his debut on DJ Sneak’s I’m A House Gangster label next week (November 25th), with a three-track EP entitled ‘Hustler Stomp’.
Relative to his releases on eminent labels such as Off Recordings and Viva Music, ‘Hustler Stomp’ reveals a slightly darker side to Sidney’s sound, with tracks that thump and rumble along on classic, stripped-back house grooves, heavy kicks and moody basslines.
“I really wanted these tracks to catch some attention on the dancefloor, so I added funk, hip hop & breakbeat-orientated vocals,” said Sidney. “All-in-all, my intention with this release was to bring raw house, more likely available for bigger floors.”
On the characteristic sound of DJ Sneak’s label, Charles (born Sidney Charles Hurricane Vieljans in Hamburg) added: “As the House Gangster style points out, house music is not only music, it’s a way of thinking, acting and living. The attitude towards house music is the most important thing – this stands behind the whole House Gangster sound.”
DJ Sneak is not the first key player to have noticed Sidney’s talents, with the likes of Fatboy Slim, Loco Dice, Marco Carola and Steve Lawler having already championed his sound in previous months. Nonetheless, his debut on I’m A House Gangster is sure to highlight Charles as one to watch in 2014.
