Ruben Brundell kick-starts 12-3’s 2014 catalogue with four-track deep house EP ‘Get’.
First up is the title track. Calls from the chopped and screwed female vocals like a siren in the night, pads sweep in and throb before the bassline bullies its way back into the mix. Bouncing bass pulses straight to the cerebral cortex as ‘Get’ bursts out of the bins. Simple yet highly effective Get will no doubt be on its way to peak time sets over the next few weeks even if it has already been “playing plenty in my sets the last couple of months, to great success each and every time,” according to Ruben himself.
Second track ‘Communicate’ has a similar vocal roll but the emphasis is much more on rhythm than bass in this one as the chords drive the track through an old school cruiser with a garage feel.
‘Tough’ carries on that garage touch with a definite ’90s vibe and a well-tempered composition. It has a refreshing and slightly experimental quality in which elements Ruben has decided will drive the track forwards and would be a perfect counter-balance for a more forward-moving tune like Get for example, in the mix. When it drops out it has such a tough feel to it giving just the same energy but a completely different angle to the opening track.
‘Backfire’ gets straight back in there with its booty slammin’ uptempo bass track. It’s an act first, ask questions later kind of track, more brawn than brains, swinging 4×4 to your jaw – a lively way to finish off the package.
A four track EP with four weighty originals is a kick-arse way to start the year for 12-3 Recordings and supremo Ruben Blundell. Get and Tough in particular are go straight into the war-chest, Communicate could also get some air time in the build and Backfire will no doubt be right up the street of a lot of today’s deep house DJs. The EP was out yesterday, available at Beatport and on iTunes.
