Roy Green & Protone – ‘Jazzypants’ EP

So it’s not even been out a week and I’ve probably overplayed it already, but Roy Green and Protone have brought out this incredible EP called ‘Jazzypants’, released on Monday through Innerground Music.

The Austrian duo certainly have a knack for bringing out deep and different drum & bass, such as Deep Inside, Joyride and Moonwalker! This time round they’ve taken us back to the highlife of the 1950’s.

The opening track ‘Five Spot’ is brushed with delicate trumpets and this amazing husky vocal that’s reminiscent of Nina Simone in one of those early smoky jazz clubs, but before you know it, the club’s going up in a haze with the next track.

‘Jazzypants’ is the main attraction (or so it may seem), it begins steadily, bringing everything to touch with soft keys and looping drums, Roy Green and Protone must have been doing some serious crate digging for this, the inspiration here must have come from the depths of some great old records.

The last song ‘The Storm’ is fantastic and clearly the stand-out piece. It’s got a sample from The Doors’ single ‘Riders On The Storm’ which has been twisted into this inexplicable crossover of drum & bass, jazz, funk and these amazingly warped bass strings that get vibrated on top of the drums! Girl you’ve gotta love your man!

Check it out here, they’ve even got a free track for you on their SoundCloud and some very on point mixes you can snatch up too.
