Legendary record label, events brand and all-round music institution, Renaissance, is preparing to burst back onto the scene with the launch of a compilation from the critically acclaimed Art Department at The Steel Yard on Saturday 21st May 2016.
In the lead up to its 25th anniversary next year, the iconic Renaissance brand has been returned to the safe hands of its owner and original founder Geoff Oakes, alongside an exciting and innovative new group of partners.
Founded in 1994 by Oakes, the label was then owned by Ministry of Sound since 2010, but now the re-launch of Renaissance with Oakes back at the helm will usher in a new era for the internationally renowned music juggernaut. In celebration of its reincarnation, the label’s first release comes courtesy of the infamous Canadian electronic outfit Art Department in the form of ‘Renaissance The Mix Collection: Art Department’
Though starting life as a duo, acting head of No. 19 Music, Jonny White, is now the lone force behind the genre-transcending game-changer. Having racked up an impressive list of awards including iTunes’ ‘Best Electronic Album’ of 2011 and ‘#1 Track Of The Year’ at the Beatport Awards, as well as gaining support from the likes of DJ Mag, Resident Advisor, Mixmag, The Guardian, Rolling Stone, i-D, Vogue, Nylon and Vibe, Art Department has also proved to be a force to be reckoned with on the live circuit. Standout performances at Ultra Music Festival, BPM, Exit, Parklife, Coachella and TomorrowWorld have set the tone for a remarkable career, signified by a coveted invitation to be guests on BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix at Maida Vale Studios, following in the footsteps of the likes of The Rolling Stones and The Beatles.
Jonny explains that whilst creating ‘Renaissance The Mix Collection: Art Department’ “I decided to step away from what I’m currently playing on tour and program something that was going to really work at home…I really tried to focus on curating a deep, classy mix with no expiry date”. The album, which will be in 2xCD and digital formats will be available in late May, after being launched with one of Renaissance’s world renowned parties on 21st May 2016 at The Steel Yard. Representing the modern incarnation of The Cross where Renaissance’s residency was the stuff of legend, The Steel Yard has played host to the likes of Hot Since 82, Richie Hawtin and Scuba, and with its high brick arches it presents the perfect venue for the rebirth of Renaissance.
In Oakes’ words, “Renaissance has been a labour of love and a huge part of my life…it’s been a bumpy ride at times but has also been a source of immense pride and pleasure for me”, and with a “current underground music policy for a new generation” it looks set to stay equally true to its impressive heritage and legacy under the watchful eye of its original creator.
With Art Department headlining, and support from Chaim, Samu.I and August Artier, Saturday 21st May looks set to be a night to remember – and the perfect way to welcome Renaissance back with a bang.
