The dawn of the approaching year sees Circo Loco boast – and boast is definitely the verb – a line-up set to rival any of the nation’s NYE parties as we see the focus in clubland shift from the last night of the year, to the first.
If there’s two nights out I can remember from given year of the last decade, it’s usually my birthday and New Year’s Eve. Maybe now there’s another. The significance of NYE has always been to celebrate the coming of the new year from its birth at midnight and the year we’re leaving behind as it passes. These days it looks like people are too cool for that. Why rush to bring in the New Year? Why not wake up fresh and spend the whole day celebrating – and of course the night.
For those itching to kick-start the year with a bang, the Circo Loco NYD Party will take you well into 2014 with nine hours of house and tech at London’s Coronet club in Elephant and Castle. Davide Squillace, Tale of Us, Damian Lazarus, Lee Foss, Richy Ahmed, System of Survival, Clive Henry and Robert James are the cast tasked with delivering a payload of jaw-swingin’ deep house and tech.
The man in charge of crowd-control for Circo Loco parties at DC-10, Davide Squillace, is headlining. The iconic trailblazer of modern dance himself, innovator behind a myriad of projects spawned to bring artists and creative minds together across the spectrum of music and underground culture with pigeonhole-defying ventures like the Hideout imprint and This and That. Having played to the world, from Berghain to Ibiza, Manchester to his native Italy, he’s now back to where he perfected his craft in London for what, despite it being one of the first, could also be one of the hottest events of 2014. An Essential Mix hall of famer, Davide is the first name on a knockout list.
After the success of sinister, out-of-this-world hit ‘Another Earth’ early on in 2013, Berlin-based Tale of Us will hit the ground running again in 2014. With their distinctive yet diverse blend of dance disciplines they’re steadily building up an arsenal of must-have tracks featuring on labels like Kompakt, Life and Death and Richie Hawtin’s Minus. If their boiler room set is anything to go by, expect a twisting trip through the darker side of tech and house.
Hot Creations will be represented in force throughout the celebrations of the fresh start and clean slate a new year brings, but Hot Creations is a collective whose reputation will always go before them. Infinity Ink duo Ali Love and Luca C will mark the turn of the year alongside Lee Foss and Richy Ahmed. Lee Foss, best known for his work as co-founder of Hot Natured (now including both Ali Love and Luca C) is a name synonymous with soulful deep house and crowd favourites like ‘Electricity’ not to mention 2013 hot plate ‘Benediction’. Expect booty-shakin’ rhythms alongside hands-in-the-air vocal cuts and subtle nods to Chicago and electro. Richy Ahmed’s rough-and-ready, rib-rattlin’ sets have seen him tour the globe this year. The Geordie lad will be another unmissable act at the Circo Loco’s NYD event. DC-10 and Circo Loco residents System of Survival, Clive Henry and Robert James finish off the bill, not to mention Crosstown Rebel Damian Lazarus.
Approaching the 15th anniversary of Circo Loco’s influence on the frontlines of the crusade of club culture, the NYD party at Coronet looks to be one of the highlights of a busy New Year period for electronic music. A capacity crowd of over 2,000 will be there, some tickets are still available.
