Having grown from a humble bootleg of American indie folk band Bon Iver covering Anais Mitchell – its sample ripped from a YouTube video – Monkey Safari’s interpretation of ‘Coming Down’ is now a fully-fledged radio edit with swish production and a character of its own.
Garnering support from a peculiarly mixed bag of influential DJs, ‘Coming Down’ (Hi Life) has transcended genre boundaries like few other records of late, making it’s way into the sets of Sven Vath, Nina Kraviz, Jacques Lu Cont, Joris Voorn, Lee Burridge, Pete Tong and Tensnake, among many others who can bend the ear of a scene or two.
Such has been the extent of its take-up, from the White Isle to the Black Sea Coast and beyond, the record will almost certainly now be topping the wish-list of many a lesser-known DJ. Unfortunately, however, unless they’re prepared to do some ripping of their own (against which, we must advise, naturally) they might have some time to wait until they can get their hands on the full track, since it’s not yet been scheduled for an official release. It is on its way, though, and with a bit of luck it might arrive in time for Christmas, but there are no guarantees – in fact, 2014 is looking more likely.
Happily, for those that aren’t so fussed about dropping it like it’s hot at their local open decks night, there’s no need to panic because you can enjoy the best bits of the tune below. And if you were wondering about the Monkey Safari brothers, well, they’re self-proclaimed nightlife addicts from Halle in Germany, owners of two record labels and a nightclub, who describe their sound as “tropically flavoured with an electric spark.”
Perhaps not so surprising they’ve come up with a number like this, then…
