Monday sees the release of Mash’s new EP ‘Dexter’ on Bulletdodge Records. The Scottish producer has been in and around the sound north of the border for a year or two now but this EP represents a step up. With previous releases on Glasgow Underground, Bulletdodge are happy to have Mash back amongst their ranks with this four tracker.
The title track is anchored by an LFO’d-up spectre in the low-end and a menacing bassline that sketches in and out of the mix. The track is murky and sinister with an intangible vocal haunting the composition that gets eerily minimalistic at times
‘Use Me’ is a more in-your-face slice of jack with a classic Chicago feeling vocal, bass and lead. A worthy number 2 with swinging hats and snapping claps lead us into the second half of the EP.
‘Rapport’ steps up next and this time we’re eased in with a busy drum track and purposeful bassline. An upbeat deep house cut, though this track has plenty of tension in and around the gothic sounds that drive it forward.
‘Sausalito’ is a welcome switch-up after the gloom and doomy sounds of the previous tracks we have chord stabs to lift us and our hands out the shadows and into the smoke-filled air that builds and clears. With a progressive groove it smoothly turns the mood and finishes off the EP on a high.
