After two successful releases that featured a wide selection of artists including the CLR and Electric Deluxe regular, Black Asteroid, along with people like Andrei Morant (Gynoid Audio/Naked Lunch), EDR’s third release maintains the label’s fast-flowing momentum with a hard-hitting solo track from JGarrett, entitled Monochrome Pusher.
Now based in the Canadian city Vancouver, JGarrett, AKA Josh Garrett, has a music legacy firmly rooted in Detroit where he lived for many years. Taking influence from key radio DJs like The Electrifying Mojo, he was introduced to pioneering electronic bands such as Kraftwerk and Juan Atkins’ duo, Cybotron.
Living in the city the spawned the term “techno”, Josh fell in love with the music that surrounded him. In the 90s, during what is widely known as the second wave of Detroit, he embarked on his career in music. Though he stayed out of the limelight that fell on the likes of Richie Hawtin, Carl Craig and other artists considered to have led the second wave, Josh was nonetheless a respected figure within the Detroit techno scene then, as he is now.
The original mix of Monochrome Pusher is dark and menacing techno with muffled pads, rolling percussion and a prominent ride cymbal. Filled with a relentless energy, the parts used to build the track breathe and pulse like a living machine.
First up on remix duty is Luis Flores who, to most techno fans, should need to introduction, with a legacy of music released on scene-leading labels like Chris Liebing’s CLR, Silent Steps and Blank Code, to name only a few. Keeping things dark and industrial, Luis switches things up using the broken rhythm of a skipping kick and adds some acid with the help of a TB-303.
Rounding off the release is label boss Jay Zoney who toughens things up with fast-flowing slabs of heavy percussion. Quickly becoming his trademark sound, Jay’s thundering rhythms roll with the force of a freight train and combine nicely with the tension of his extended break, filled with dark ambience.
