Fresh Out The Gate: Some of this week’s best new releases

Let’s take a look at what’s Fresh Out the Gate this week. The biggest signal on TNG’s Peak Meter goes to hotshot Northerner Bontan.

The deep house wonderkid dropped ‘Move On Out’ today on Mark Knight’s Toolroom. Those familiar with tracks like his remixes of Josh Butler’s ‘I Got a Feeling’ and NiCe7’s ‘Time to Get Physical’, will instantly recognise the warm, round bass notes and crisp 4×4 rhythm.

I Got a Feeling was a huge international success and Bontan’s steep trajectory will take him further into mainstream and crossover success, though probably less movement in more underground nightspots. Toolroom will have no doubt seen the appeal and potential of the young protégé; likewise Pleasurekraft’s Kraftek imprint and Chase & Status, who’s MTA Records label also dropped remixes from the youngster. Bontan has seen support from big names on the circuit, with support from the likes of Carl Cox, Pete Tong, Bondax and Hot Since 82.

Tensnake and Nile Rodgers see their ‘Love Sublime’ get treatments from Duke Dumont, Le Youth, Jonas Rathsman and Ewan Pearson in a release that also includes the original and an extended mix. The original is a nu disco cracker with a classic feel. The remixes are all strong but the Jonas Rathsman remix is probably the best and most original of the four. The ‘Love Sublime’ EP drops on the super hip, mega-underground imprint Virgin EMI.

‘Apetunes Vol. 2’ is an intricately-balanced, 5-track release from Lany Recordings. It features originals from Ante Perry, Mahan & Flo Mrzdk, label-head Maxim Lany & Katorski, Adam Berecki and LouLou Players. Pick of the bunch are Mahan & Flo Mrzdk’s ‘I See U Dancin’ and the indie dance track from LouLou Players, ‘You Are Here’.

A big week for minimal with releases from Victor Ruiz and Breech. Ruiz drops ‘Out of Control/Aware’ on Twisted Frequency with a couple generous helpings of floor-pummelling tech. ‘Out of Control’ is like a sup’d-up version Dusty Kid’s iconic ‘Tsunamy’ with a Kraftwerk-style vox feeding into devastating drops. ‘Aware’ is a deeper track with a similar pulsing bass and vocal-work to the first with a busy melody on top.

Breech’s ‘Nightmare’ EP takes a harder approach to the minimal sound. ‘Nightmare’ is a no-nonsense cruiser from the Hungarian and ‘Fading’ comes in like Predator let loose in Berghain – it gets scary. Side-chained white noise disorientates amidst the relentless bass. The EP is released through Fitter.

On the dubstep side of things, Kronix drops his sub-heavy two-tracker ‘The Void/The End’ EP via USV Recordings. The former being an energetic, roving bass track and the latter a darker more thoughtful offering complete with sinister vocal cuts.
