Mary J Blige is set to release her new album ‘The London Sessions’ in November through Capitol Records. As the album title suggests, the R&B songstress has decided to venture across the pond in search of inspiration for her new project. The new album will feature production from Surrey born brothers Disclosure as well as their ‘Latch’ collaborator Sam Smith.
As well as working alongside Blige on ‘The London Sessions’, Disclosure have also recently spent time in the studio with Q Tip as well as producing ‘You Stressin’ for the up and coming Bishop Nehru. Having previously worked with Disclosure back in January on a remix of Settle’s ‘F For You’, and some time later joining them on stage in New York’s Terminal 5 for a live performance to the delight of fans, Blige has had a proper introduction to the British way of doing things.
Subsequently featuring on another British smash ‘Stay With Me’ by artist Sam Smith, she has been forthcoming with her praise for the UK’s attitude to the creative process: “The music is free over here the way it used to be in the States. Artists are just free to do what they love.” On the subject of her collaborators, Blige referred to them as family in an interview with The Guardian: “Working with these guys, it’s like they’re my family. We all seem to have a good chemistry together.”
She also commented to The Observer on the UK house scene and the success of its producers as a result of their true passion for the genre: “The sound in London at the moment is house music. That is what the majority of people are producing their songs like. But the ones that get truly successful are the ones using proper songwriting. Rudimental for example – they write proper songs and then produce them like dance music. And that is exactly what we’re trying to do, along with a few other people.’
