Clayjay has just dropped a new track ‘Mr. Postman’, available now for free download through his SoundCloud page.
At only eighteen years old the youthful San Franciscan producer, also a part of production duo FACEJAM, has already received musical support from the likes of Diplo, CRNKN, TRAP CITY, Beauty Brain and Earbuddy.
His new track ‘Mr. Postman’ opens with some dusky crackling and an isolated, pitch shifted vocal line that slowly blends into indistinguishable synthy bleeps as the beat launches into a bellowing trap-style rhythm. Then, as you may have guessed from the track’s title, around 1.50 Clayjay comes in with a fat sample of The Marvelettes’ 1961 hit ‘Please Mr. Postman’ – dropping the original vocal and piano line in as he builds anticipation for the second drop before thumping sub bass and whirring snares announce the approach of the track’s imminent climax.
The Mr. Postman sample isn’t all that original a choice: it’s been done before and it’ll probably be done again. However after listening to a few other remixes, including Cragga’s dubstep remix (which has had almost 10 million views on Youtube), it is fair to say Clayjay does something pretty fresh with relatively tired material. By keeping his use of the sample to a minimum, he creates a few surprises in the lead up that held our attention.
