Following up from his debut on Livity Sound, the Bristolian producer Bruce releases his second record on Hessle Audio. Not bad, eh? As if from nowhere, Bruce has burst onto the scene, creating an EP that seems to focus more on a cohesive flow, as appose to being a series of singles.
HES027 opens with certain warmth to it. Deep kicks swing their way around a flickering synth, which grows colder due to teasing fades in volume; occasionally resulting in bold moments of silence. Even after its relentless start, ‘Not Stochastic’ still grows. The synth begins to feel more and more frantic with next to no let up apart from its position oscillating around the bouncing kicks. It feels paranoid, on the ball… waiting to bite at any given moment. ‘Trip’ meanwhile takes a tribal approach to percussion. Taking the teasing elements from the A, and calming them down. It beams with a certain covert Jungle influence that in a way completely oozes a wilderness vibe. The high-pitched hums of bugs and windy ambiance pragmatically create feelings of serene seclusion with nothing but the warmth of a fire for company.
The final record on this EP ‘My Legs Wouldn’t Go Quick Enough’ sounds almost like a combination of the first two, with its frantic lead well met by a warming undertone. Resonant synthesis evolves through the track with the help of filters to guide natural changes in percussion. The hats are piercingly high, whilst the snares are so delicate they sound like vinyl crackle, and right as I’m beginning to get my groove on, the record literally crumbles away into peacefulness. The bassline hums, leaving the track to carry you some place far away for the remainder. Echo’s of the beat burst through only to be quickly grabbed and reigned in by scraping noise, the paranoia is over.
