Low Steppa – ‘All Day’ (On My Mind)

Low Steppa – ‘All Day’ (On My Mind)

You know, you could never even begin to put a figure on how many remixes of Kathy Brown’s ‘Turn Me Out’ are lurking out there on the vast digital plains of the internet, rolling around like audio tumbleweed. There’s almost certainly an even more ridiculous number of unfinished versions – probably several times as many, in fact – languishing on 2gb hard drives of ageing bedroom producers in just about every country you can think of. I’ve just googled “obscure countries” to see if there were any that sounded like they couldn’t feasibly lay claim to their very own partial Kathy Brown remix. None stood out.

How do I know this? Well, I personally can think of least four people who I’d bet my last beer token have attempted one. You see, before the days of Acapellas4u there were approximately 7 really good, clean, high quality acapellas available on KaZaA, and one of these was, you guessed it, ‘Turn Me Out’. And in case you don’t know, it takes a lot of skill and patience to lift a vocal out of a full track, neither of which are in abundance. Consequently, pretty much everyone who ever owned an early incarnation of Cubase dropped in that badboy at some point. Alas, most of these poor folk abandoned their remix halfway through when it suddenly dawned on them that a gazillion other people had done the same thing. I should know, I’m one of them.

It was already looking like my version was never going to receive major airplay, but having just listened to Low Steppa’s interpretation, which I think is quite possibly the best among a swathe of valiant efforts, I can confirm that it will remain under digital lock and key forevermore – it’s just too embarrassing. This, on the other hand, is massive…
