Marquis Hawkes – Raw Materials EP [Houndstooth]

Just when we thought we had figured out how Marquis Hawkes was going to play it with Houndstooth, he flips the table over to reveal his rougher side.

On his new release Raw Materials Marquis Hawkes make a welcome return to the sort of borderline-primitive house rhythms on which he built his career (think back to his early work on Glasgow’s Dixon Avenue Basement Jams). Drawing influence from the like of Ron Hardy, Gene Hunt and Roy Davis Jr, Marquis updates the original formula using modern production techniques.

Title track Raw Materials features a mix of dreamy vocals, dusty pads and deep 808 beats, whilst on the flip things get a whole lot edgier. Taking no prisoners, two cuts of raw drum machine clatter find themselves flanked by strained vocals on Ave That and winding analogue tones on Jerk U Later.

With support from the likes of Pete Tong, Annie Mac, Laurent Garnier, Heidi, B.Traits, James Zabiela and UTTU, these cuts looks set to raise the roof on a few summer raves this coming season! Out now on Houndstooth both digitally and on 12″ vinyl, take a listen below and pick up a copy here.
