Dauwd – ‘Jupiter George’ EP [Kompakt]

Dauwd has done it again! This time around he’s brought an infectious bunch of beats together in his new EP. Jupiter George, his third release on the impressionable Kompakt, is out next week.

With his two previously impeccable Kompakt releases Saleh and Kindlinn Dauwd certainly set the bar high. Expectations of his music could not be more excitable after his phenomenal remix of Fault Lines. Currently at the tail end of a string of shows that have taken him all over Europe, his production efforts are often the centrepiece in his high energy sets so it is hardly surprising that the dance floor influence sways its way into Dauwd’s mesmerising tracks.

Jupiter George sees three new cuts get the light of day, the self-titled opening track begins with clacks and clings as a wrapping beat comes right at you. It’s beautifully hypnotic deep house and it’s not hard to understand why the blogosphere loves it. Jupiter George does have this certain feeling of space, yet it has some really rich layers in order to get there. Without looking to yesteryear I can’t help but notice comparable notes from Kompakt’s earlier catalogues and resoundingly close similarities to the legendary Immer mixes of label boss Michael Mayer, perhaps a nod to the past while making moves for the future.

Ritter Sports comes steaming in with a sort of nobility, it’s funky, it’s always moving, steadily building. Dauwd has developed a knack for solid basslines, and Ritter Sports the second track flexes with little moments of surprise. Overtly simplistic with an altogether smooth flow, the weight of club heavy productions isn’t so prominent in this one but it’s not exactly a filler track either.

Take Four is the last track on Jupiter George and it’s also, in my opinion, the stand-out. Dauwd flirts with a lot of different sounds on this one; there’s elements of techno, drum & bass, a steady melody and synths, quite the Smorgasbord, but it all melds together just like your town centre Yates, Smirnoff and bucktoothed cavaliers sporting tribal tattoos shouting “eer eeer”…! Perfect for each other, if not a little distracting to the senses.

That’d be about it then – if you want some more from Dauwd, he’s also sprinkled his magic over a Kiasmos track. His remix of Held for Erased Tapes is out of this world and its release is going hand in hand with this year’s Record Store Day. If you find the 12” before I do you’re a bastard, but I respect you!
