Less than a year into its lifespan, UK based Sprung Records have reached their fourth instalment of face creasing techno. Having established a name for themselves with solid contributions from Hoth System, John Platt and Akinse, next up sees the turn of Wilmot.
An artist who admittedly I’m not familiar with despite bolstering a rather impressive library of tracks on his Soundcloud page, the San Francisco based producer has put together the ‘Reigner EP’: fit with 3 industrial belters that approach aggression in very different ways.
‘Bedside Stepper’ is a unique record and different to anything else released on Sprung. It implements reverberated synthesis with a rough, storming kick and hat combo. Much like a dub-techno record its approach is slow and concentrates more on natural growth, revving towards a freight train of enthralling high-hats.
Title track ‘Reigner’ meanwhile is classic Sprung, featuring a Blawan like approach with percussion taking lead, working well with clicking hats and a proper full-bodied kick drum. It doesn’t mess about; it’s relentless and borderline haunting with that murmuring vocal repeating itself throughout the majority of the record. Despite being more sudden than both the A and the C, impact is felt in all the right places so it doesn’t feel too out of place.
As hinted, the building of intensity in the third and final track. It takes Wilmot 4 minutes to evolve a rough, rumbling acid riff into a bone shattering ride cymbal without bringing notice to any other additionally layers in ‘Plains’. It’s one big build up and a serious weapon for any brave DJs willing to give it a test.
It’s without a doubt that 004 is another solid contribution to the Sprung Records catalogue. Wilmot has embraced the labels raw approach to acid and industrial elements with unique flair, taking on this harder style of techno with delicate progressions and atmospheric tension building.
