Hundred Waters, an experimental dance pop quartet from Florida, have just released a music video for ‘Out Alee’, the it-track from this year’s it-album ‘The Moon Rang like a Bell’. The four and a half minute cinematic was directed by Michael Langan, who has some previous experience with the musicians creating the video of ‘Cavity’, has managed to achieve an intricate visual presentation true to the “song’s lush textures and beguiling melodies”.
A white-sheet covered house and spirit calling references over a creased world atlas focusing on the Pacific Ocean send the band members out in the open sea as the track escalates; it peaks with the appearance of hula dancers and the artists performing in a circle on a desert island with the sunset behind them: all metaphors related to the main subject of the track hidden behind its unusual title on which Nicole expands further for thefader.com: “’Alee’ means the side of the ship that is sheltered from the wind. I find myself there often.” A video, definitely just as quirky, abstract and vaguely oriental as the track itself, a treat worth watching even if not yet a fan of the band.
The four have also just released an EP for the song ‘Down from the Rafters’. Haunting vocals are depicting the story of an escape from the earthy to the spiritual with the track’s music resonating along with the lyrics, transitioning from an enticing fireplace-storytelling violin solo, making its way for the plot to unfold and lead to the same violin piece, this time fully inflated and developed into its complete melancholy and mysticism, being accompanied by Nicole Miglis’ haunting vocals. The EP includes the original track along with a couple of versions of it mashed up by Tim Hecher Huxley and the Field. The former giving it a more dance-y, approachable form by adding a lively upbeat and the latter slowing it down, making the remix even more dreamy than the original, while translating the general flair of the story to an abstract dance track.
To top it off, Hundred Waters have recently set off on a tour with Interpol round the US and will be gigging till the end of the year (dates and details below).
