Under Black Helmet – ‘Mute’ EP

Code Is Law launch their sixth release with a debut four track EP entitled ‘Mute’ from London based duo Under Black Helmet (UBH).

Not much is known of these rather illusive producers and this reflects in the EPs first track ‘Have You Ever Had A Dream’. Sombre keys and windy synthesis dance the opening as the occasional injection of electronic synthesis teases to what’s in store. A brutally blunt kick strikes, shaking off the introductions shady elements, upping the octane big time as the tracks tempo really begins to show with the installation of a harsh militant high hat. Accepting and absorbing the keys and vocal for the remainder, the record begins to drive from here on out, cruising its way into the self-entitled, ‘Mute’.

It’s a deep track. The keys shudder frantically, varying in pitch with the support of oscillating synthesis glancing off of them. The hats flick with a certain amount of attitude, releasing a little bit of tension from each blunt kick. Boldly, the percussion fades away into a state of jittery euphoria, guided similarly to that in the first track by a woman’s spoken word. Things begin to tense up even more so, right up to the point of need, at which UBH releases one of their hugely satisfying kick drums.

On the B-side, ‘Sabotage’ creeps ominously with its synth never feeling obtrusive. The kick takes a side side-to-side motion, climbing it’s way up to a burst of life with the introduction of claps. Although this ups the intensity, the record remains relatively calm at its core as the track pulls these elements in cohesively, meaning this is the sort of track you can really float with, likewise to the concluding record ‘Lost Signal’. Flowing pads string together the kick and hat combo as a bubbly synth heightens senses through a dreamy beat-less period. It’s the brightest of the bunch, and a wonderful way to end this beautifully gloomy EP.
