UVB – ‘Second Life’ EP

UVB – ‘Second Life’ EP

Since day one Mord have been known for pushing a more complex style of Techno, much assisted by UVB’s first release on the label earlier in the year ‘What I’ve Learned’. It featured sinister and unique leads moving relentlessly through crunchy percussion, with the digital only exclusive ‘Mixton’ being the real star. It (thankfully) gets its turn in the limelight, opening ‘Second Life’ with its haunting and ominous synth movement, which feels as though it’s hunting its way through tall grass in a perilous fashion. Not resting on its laurels, the self-entitled and second track on this EP is similarly moody. Rolling its way frantically through a series of atmospheric synths like a freight train.

There’s a certain similarity between the two tracks on each slice of wax here. Whether it is in atmosphere, weight or aggression. The record’s B side takes the form of 2 rage filled youths attacking a piano, with ‘Anxiety’ stomping on the front and ‘Supertronic’ disembowelling it from the inside. On the C, ‘Five O’ thumps its way onto the scene with a much simpler formula. It sports a solid kick snare combo, which is intensified big time on ‘Zakajen’. This one bangs, and I mean really bangs. It’s certainly not for the faint-hearted and the claps alone possess enough power to make a face clench.

UVB has created the sort of record that will have you going “Oh no, actually… this is my favourite” with every track that comes on. Which of course is an absolute dream for Techno DJs. However, remember what I was saying about the similarity in tracks on each 12 inch? Yeah, well forget that for records on the D plate. ‘Psihoza’ is as evolving and trippy as the galloping claps that phase over one another. It heightens senses with its beaming synths, making for intense, overwhelming sensations. Whereas ‘Cardiff Luv’ is a delicate shiner that dips its way in and out the crisp and snappy steam rolling hats. Okay, I think this one might be my favourite actually…
