Hurricane Gonzo hitting the UK seems to have put the official full stop of the British summer: the festival season. Along with the inevitable Halloween parties, Christmas jumpers and fuzzy coats, October has brought the time for smaller scale gigs, warming up pints and cheeky wine.
The last few weeks have been even a greater deal of a month for the boys from Emprss, the year old electronic trio from Farnham in South England. Only in their mid-twenties, Allan, Leo and Johnny already have an EP and a video behind them; and have spent this October (14th till the 23rd) gigging in Paris and around the UK along with acclaimed band Hundred Waters. To top it all up, they have released a brand new track, named ‘Down’, from their upcoming debut album, planned to be out and on the shelves sometime soon in the early 2015.
Once again, the lads have clashed some pop and dance, as well as, electro and even R&B to tease their quickly growing mostly online public. ‘Down’ is an elegant teaser, with hinted influences from Ozzie producer Flume and UK indie-pop and electronic experiment SBTRKT, designed to keep the crowd just enough on their toes, yet not reveal the overall tone of the album. Furthermore, the track features dark production alongside ghost-like vocals to thug one’s deepest emotions.
Emprss’ front man, Ralph Allan is the songwriter out of the three. It is his ideas of philosophical and physical escapism that flow through the lyrics of their songs. This is what he shares on the story behind ‘Down’: “This song is basically about feeling like you’re suddenly out of your element and unable to trust anyone, even those who are closest to you. It’s about loneliness (in spite of being surrounded by people), it’s about paranoia…”
Overall, the track seems to be shaping the melancholic mood for the following gloomy weeks. If you are still transitioning make sure you give their last couple of gigs on the line a visit or if you miss them get on the Emprss website to sign up for further news on tours and tickets.
