SOPHIE rocks first Boiler Room set in L.A.

The enigmatic producer that is SOPHIE has been stirring up hype within electronica with his infectious and forward-thinking club music for the past eighteen months. Recently releasing ‘Lemonade’, which has gone on to storm its way through a fair few music websites ‘best track’ lists as well as generating a huge amount of buzz amongst DJ’s, labels and producers, everyone loves SOPHIE and we do too!

For the first time, the producer reveals his face: arriving in LA and appearing in full drag for an exclusive appearance on Boiler Room TV. In a set filled with deliciously pretty and twinkly beats, SOPHIE channels a mix of tasty pitch-shifted R&B vocals, euro-trance synths and powerful kick drums into what is overall an incredibly euphoric half hour. Steering away from the usual Boiler Room set up of well-lit rooms and clear visibility of the decks, SOPHIE maintains a semblance of anonymity that allows the illusion of his constructed stage personality to remain intact.

Whilst the overall visual performance is a far cry from the stylised neon-bright press shots we have become used to associating SOPHIE’s music with, a decent amount of convincing flouncing around does take place behind the decks. Also the extra accessorising, with pink headphones alongside a matching patent leather skirt and backpack, show thought has gone into the performance and adds a nice touch to the overall gimmick.

Ultimately, though, what we’re interested in is the music: which in this instance can’t be faulted. Jammed full of original bits and pieces from the producer, it’s a total delight from start to finish.
