XXXY – ‘Goldfish’

XXXY (aka Rupert Taylor) returns to Doc Daneeka’s Ten Thousand Yen with a pair of sparkly and futuristic numbers.

The Manchester-based producer, who first rose to attention with his refined take on UK Garage’s propulsive and heavy foot-forward sound, is currently signed to various labels. As well as featuring on Fabric’s seminal ‘Elevator Music’ compilation, over the past year Taylor has had success with further releases on Infrasonic and Fortified Audio as well as his single ‘Never Enough’ released earlier in the year by Rinse.

Known for his expertise in constructing bassy house-led smashers with a twist, the producer comes up trumps again with this new release. Having dropped the ‘Progression’ EP through Ten Thousand Yen earlier this summer, XXXY returns to the label with new material ‘Goldfish’ and ‘Evade’: a pair of upbeat, colourful and fresh tracks set to shake up underground dances all over the country.

A side ‘Goldfish’ is a big, shoulder-twitching house tune. Tight snapping drum work provides the track’s driving momentum as boisterous and energetic snares, kicks and hi-hats tightly knit together to form a robust four to the floor framework. Woven into the beat are energetic mids and a funky, winding bass line; carrying the track forward on a rolling up-beat vibe.

On the flip, B side ‘Evade’ opens with a bubbling melodics and light syncopated percussion. Building up into a rising melodic jam, XXXY builds up the drums and adds another funky driving bass line to the mix. Six minutes in total, the track ebbs and flows through various stages of development but the ultimate effect is one of complete synergy.
