The Legendary 1979 Orchestra – ‘Disco București’

Mastermind behind The Legendary 1979 Orchestra, Andrei Idu, who grew up Bucharest, Romania, describes his work as an audio homage to the city that raised him. This EP, released on June 16th, is the product of his records released during the 70s and 80s being revived and rejuvenated in order to create what is truly a remarkable collection.

Out of the four songs, ‘Presiune’ is certainly the most exotic. First time I’ve ever heard bongos in a dance track and I’m loving every minute of it. The song is supported by a strong beat with a clapped backbeat that gives the song a strong backbone, gradually fattened out with smooth vocal elements and more demanding sounds, including guitar and piano riffs. All the different sounds are layered so seamlessly that they blend together in a melodious, edgeless fusion.

‘Tema Pian’ is completely different in tone and encompassed by electronic elements yet still possesses the same sonorous beat that breathes vigorous life into all of the songs, offering a more modern take on the disco genre. Undulating with urban grooves and incorporating elements of electro, ‘Tema Plan’ oozes deep house from every silvery pore.

‘Raza de Soare’ is slower but still sustains the level of depth preserved throughout. The song swings into a full disco frenzy, bursting with riffs of jazz and popping artificial drums. It evolves as it progresses, increasing and decreasing and too active to stay static, before pausing at the inclusion of harmonious vocals and thereafter erupting into the buoyant tune once again, this time even more vivacious.

Each one of the songs featured on the EP is bursting with vitality; such is rarely discovered in modern music. Almost makes me want to go to Romania.
