Plug, Sheffield, hosted the joint birthday of home-grown nights Ambush and No Uniform, on the 28th February and my god was it a memorable one!
It was a celebration of No Uniform’s and newcomer Ambush’s 8th and 1st year anniversaries respectively as two of the biggest events at the heart of the Sheffield scene. Just half an hour after the doors opened, the dancefloor was rammed. From that moment onwards you just knew the night was going to be special. Why? Because two of the most exciting names in the UK Bass scene – Breach and Route 94 – were about to take centre-stage.
Breach, alias of Naked Naked Records head Ben Westbeech, has been seen with all the current top dogs of house music, stacking up the kudos from his ‘Jack’ EP. Route 94 gained credit in his own right by letting the music do the talking rather than the sort of PR overdrive used to propel some artists into the spotlight. He has no social media pages, nothing, except the reviews of listeners and radio heads across the UK and beyond.
The night itself was special in that it was part of Breach’s debut UK tour – a 12-date run of pretty much every city in the UK with a thirst for underground music – laying down a colossal three-hour set at each rave.
On the night, everything from the lighting to the music was faultless. Both Breach and Route 94 dominated the dancefloor from the moment they took to the decks, delivering a pair of unforgettable sets.
Route 94 kept the crowd hyped with a ‘90s setlist but the real hysteria came when he dropped his infamous ‘My Love’, with its heady piano thuds and delicate electro glow, offset by the radio-friendly vocals of Jess Glynne. Then it was time for the headline act.
Breach covered a diverse array of techno, house and garage, before ending his set with a few disco gems much to the delight of the crowd. Similar to Route 94, when Breach dropped his chart hit ‘Everything You Never Had’ the atmosphere in the room skyrocketed and again when he slipped in deep house, summer anthem ‘Jack’.
TNG caught up with Breach after the event to get his thoughts. He said: “I love playing Sheffield and this one at Plug was something extra special. Sold out show, amazing crowd and a brilliant vibe! Can’t wait to come back.”
Throughout the whole night, no space was left unfilled on a jammed dancefloor which is how you know the promoters have smashed it. Both Ambush and No Uniform deserve a massive applause for an all-round, well-delivered and memorable night.
