Sleeper – ‘Simulation Theory’ EP

Sleeper – ‘Simulation Theory’ EP

After a slew of releases in 2013, prolific, dub-plate specialist Sleeper is ready to drop latest EP ‘Simulation Theory’ on Osiris Music, for their own 2014 debut.

With previous releases on Artikal and Distance’s Chestplate imprint, Sleeper returns to Osiris with a 7-track instalment of his intricate, tech-tonic dubstep. Experimenting for the first time with FM synthesis and using only “four oscillators” he has forged gigantic sounds from a synthesised, future dubscape.

It’s no wonder Youngsta and Distance are siphoning exclusives from man like Sleeper with master-crafted sounds and heads-down menace from the roots of dubstep culture. Native to Coventry, his education started nearly a decade ago at nights like Sub Dub and Exodus in Leeds.

Tracks like title track ‘Simulation Theory’ are where dubstep belongs. Hypnotic, evolving builds perforated with rusting, metallic, sonic objects – pressure building and releasing into titanic, sub-heavy blowouts. Tracks like ‘Burn the Bridge’ and ‘Structure 3’ are hot-stepping, unrelenting power tracks. ‘Meth’ and ‘Interference’ are cuts of atmospheric sound design and manipulation at its finest; and ‘Atef Crown’ – the symbol of the cult of Osiris – is a dark, hypnotic groove that advances through the mix like the marching armies of the pharaohs.

More than the sum of its parts, the Simulation Theory EP is a portal to a place that’s rarely ventured and hard to let go of. This strong EP touches down on the 17th of March available digitally and on vinyl. Sleeper featured alongside Chestplate labelmates Distance and District, as well as guys like LTJ Bukem and DJ Hype at Fabric last night.
