Phil Weeks – ‘The Art of Sampling’

Acclaimed Parisian DJ and producer, Phil Weeks, is to release his third album in as many years on October 4th. ‘The Art of Sampling’ follows 2012’s ‘Raw Instrumental’ LP and a handful of heavily played singles and EPs in between, including ‘Sharks Looking For Fishes’, released earlier this month on Guy Gerber’s imprint, Supplement Fact Records.

But it’s on Phil’s very own label, Robosoul Recordings – the vehicle for his LPs since ‘Yeah I Like That!’ in 2003 – that he is to Release ‘The Art of Sampling’. Robosoul’s 126th release, the album will be made available, in time-honoured tradition, as a double 12-inch, delivering what is described as “another healthy dose of raw underground genius” from Chicago house purist, Weeks.

Building on the characteristic sound that he established with this summer’s ‘Creative Thinking’ EP, the new LP features seven thumping house cuts, all of which bear the hallmarks of Phil’s dexterity behind an Akai MPC3000. Warm and crunchy drums are provided by the classic Roland 909, amidst a gang of heavyweight vintage analog samples sourced from… Well, that would be telling, wouldn’t it?

Check out the track ‘Smooth Trippy Still Funky’, below, which we think is one of the highlights, alongside an episode of Phil’s cult YouTube series, ‘Underground Chronicles’, which demonstrates the creative process behind ‘Glory Glory’, as Weeks takes to the MPC3000, using an Al Green… I mean… Errr… some old sample to create the groove :]
