Tim Tintin turns our attention to trills of tantalising techno tunes, testing his talent t’rough (I’m Irish) his tactful tracks. But alliteration aside, he really is an impressive artist, and his ‘Daylight’ EP at his label Monkey Business earned him huge support from a number of well-known DJs. Due for release on the 10th of this month, ‘Caught in my Secrets’ is his latest work, coming prewrapped in down-played tech-house goodness, so break out the boxcutter and let ‘er rip.
The song behind the name, ‘Caught in my Secrets’, contains layer upon layer of beats, composed of resonating thumps and electronic swipes and simple drumming, creating an artificial heartbeat, a melee of sounds. Yet even as new additions slip amongst the percussion, the pace remains steady and smooth. The song builds up slowly, gradually expanding and taking on new mass as it does, including a brief vocal outcry that sounds like the audio from the Solange Knowles security tape. Overall it’s a combo on the same level as the Big Mac, Ant & Dec, and Ribena mixed with Lemonade (try it.)
‘Behind the Tape’ is similarly paced and has the same underlying echoing depth, but expresses a more techno vibe. Instead of building gradually, it seems to go through stages, shifting between levels of harshness while remaining relatively smoothed over. The only (minor) vocal input this time are a few breathy sighs here and there, like when you finally get your Sunday roast after a week of Koka noodles, giving the song a sensual club vibe.
‘Still Kicking’ possesses a harder tone than the others, with more emphatic sounds that have little variation throughout. Still heavily focused on percussion, the song – and the EP – is a violent union of rhythmic beats.
