New Zealand-born singer-songwriter and producer Thomston returns with brand-new single ‘Casual’ alongside B-side ‘Middle Name’, out now via Warner Music Australia.
With its sombre piano chords and heartfelt lyrics, lead track ‘Casual’ sees Thomston tap into the conflicting emotions that come with being in a casual relationship. “People are all over the place,” he explains. “One second I want marriage and kids and a dog and a house, and the next I want to be alone. I want commitment until I don’t. ‘Casual’ is about being in a relationship with a person of a similar temperament that is just terrible on paper but part of you wants to give in to the ‘what-ifs’ of a future together. It’s about wondering if commitment is all it takes.”
Both tracks are set to feature on Thomston’s forthcoming double EP release, ‘En-route: Los Angeles’ and ‘London’, out in October. Thomston noted, “My hope is that this will give a sense of structure and cohesion to this collection of songs written with a bunch of different people over the last 3 years.” In support of his upcoming project, he is poised for a three-date Australian tour next month.
First emerging onto the scene in 2014 with an experimental EP he released for free, Thomston went onto hone in on his effortless songwriting talents. In 2016, he released his debut album Topograph, which was recorded over five cities in three continents, keeping the bedroom intimacy that he had delivered with his homegrown releases but on a larger scale. Since then Thomston has forged his path, achieving considerable levels of success that include 90 million streams – no mean feat for someone in his early 20s.
Yet another stellar release from the New Zealander, new single ‘Casual’ demonstrates just how strong Thomston’s forthcoming EP release will be.
