Taking a step back from the hard-hitting drum & bass rhythms of preceding single ‘Can’t Chase Me’, whose World-A-Reggae-approved video sees frontman Adrian Benn and featured artist Horseman roaming London’s stores, ‘Twilight’ is a slow dash of blue-eyed soul and pulsating urban R&B. Backed by muted reggae guitars and singer Adrian Benn’s distinct and lofty vocals, the track shows a much more restrained side to They Say Jump’s sound. Stamped by a palpable energy, sombre melody and woozy bass lines, its mix of downtempo intensity brings to mind artists like Alex Clare and Kwabs – the latter being the band’s former vocalist.
Featured on their forthcoming EP, ‘Lift Your Mood’, ‘Twilight’ is also the record’s most personal track to date. Detailing the break-up of a band member, its title refers to the precarious time in between relationships, a subject matter that lends itself to a slower, more melodic style in contrast to the band’s more characteristic high-tempo, party music sound. Produced by Ed West – the man behind artists like Dan Boyle, Kibir La Amlak and Adam ‘Hylu’ Ainly – ‘Twilight’ is heavily influenced by post-dubstep artists like James Blake, projecting an ambient clove of beautiful falsetto vocals and cordial textures.
Forming in 2010, They Say Jump are made up of Adrian Benn on vocals, Rhys Owen on saxophone, Ben Pearce on guitar, Sam Edgington on bass, Luke Allwood on keys, Jackson Mathod on trumpet, and Mike Clowes on drums. Bringing together a passion for music from all cultures, the collective have garnered a strong London following from their energetic live shows, including spots at Secret Garden Party, the Brixton Hootenanny, and Wilderness Festival. Following their initial live success, the band released their debut album, ‘One Hundred Summers’, in September 2013, and were subsequently touted as “ones to watch” by Harper’s Bazaar Magazine.
Returning with their most impassioned and quivering track to date, They Say Jump continue to incorporate the lively influences of modern electro into their traditional reggae routes. As part of their upcoming ‘Lift Your Mood’ EP, ‘Twilight’ is a gorgeous exhibition of oscillating bass lines and thought provoking song writing.
