Skittles is one of Manchester’s finest exports. The emcee and producer, also a part of rising supergroup Levelz, has long been affiliated with DRS’s Estate Recordings and today releases his ‘Bumba’ EP through the label.
With features from fellow Mancunion talents DRS, Fox, Chimpo and Rolla, the ‘Bumba’ EP follows on from his highly praised 2012 LP ‘Poor with £100 Trainers’ as Skittles continues to assert himself as an incredible talent amongst fans of grime, hip hop, d&b and bass music alike. Let’s not forget his highly political, 2014 social smash ‘Problem’, which appeared on Icicle’s ‘Entropy’ LP for Shogun Audio.
Title track ‘Bumba’ features on point, grimey production from Chimpo alongside bars from Skittles and Estate head honcho DRS, and is accompanied by a video that features an appearance from treasured raver Salford John – a huge part of the local scene who tragically lost his life last year (RIP).
Following tracks ‘If I knew then’, ‘Marajuana’ and ‘The Pre’ continue to demonstrate Skittle’s tight hold over creative, rhythmically-focused lyrics. Each tell stories woven through with socially aware commentary and an underlying critique of the modern status quo.
Out now through Estate, watch the video for ‘Bumba’ below and pick up your own copy of the EP for a mere £3.50 here – we assure you it’s well worth it.
