To mark its second year of business, Lucid Dreaming Records has released a new EP by German house star, SIS, AKA Burak Sar. The aptly-titled ‘Lucid Hangover’ EP features a brace of original tracks by one of the most unique and versatile producers of the genre right now – his enduring Turkish roots shine through as ever, imbuing contemporary, driving 4/4 beats with shades of Eastern colour.
Having notched up releases on Crosstown Rebels, Get Physical and Nick Curly’s prestigious Cecille Records, SIS should need no introduction. His reputation for faultless productions precedes him and it’s clear to see why he is one of the most respected names in house music. While this release represents yet another stylistic hop for SIS, true to form, it’s a finely-crafted piece of work from start to finish. And it’s not only SIS that should be commended but also Lucid Dreaming Records for the stunning Salvador Dali-style cover art.
‘Clash’ is first up on the two-track EP. Assuasive pads sweep across light percussion, filling the mix with an electric rhythm that, for want of a better cliché, sends shivers down the spine. This combined with the subtle use of panpipe-soft keys washed in reverb for a distinctly oriental melody results in a tranquil but captivating motif that floats on top of a comparatively sturdy house groove. Although ‘Clash’ is laden with chill-out vibes that will no doubt remind many of a perfect Ibiza sunset, the rolling bassline gives the track a prominent Balearic energy for undeniable dancefloor credentials.
‘Hang’ is the second track on the EP and within a few seconds it’s obvious to see (or hear) that it’s the perfect sequel to ‘Clash’. Though it follows suit with more oriental tones, laced with a perfect amount of high-frequency sparkle and a subtle wash of reverb, the drums are pacier, much harder-hitting and distinctly purposeful, making it the more crowd-rocking number of the two. As with ‘Clash’, there is a huge amount of sonic depth, yet it maintains a solid and unwavering groove throughout. Dropped at the right time, this track will put an end to pointless dancefloor conversations and quickly turn the room into a sweaty mess.
