I arrived at Egg LDN on a hot Sunday night eagerly awaiting to spend my bank holiday immersed in loud, driving techno. Sabajaq, founded by Warboy promised just that, with a stella line-up headlined by Chicago legend and one my all-time favourite selectors Green Velvet.
I arrived just after midnight to catch Just Her’s set in the main room which reached capacity early. Just Her wet everyone’s appetite, warming up the crowd nicely with a driving and melodic techno set boasting tracks such as ‘letting Go’ produced by herself featuring Keiran Fowkes. As the eerie vocals creeped in over the melodic harmony and pulsating bass the crowd knew they were in for a night of top class music.
Following on from Just Her was a 2 hour set from Paride Saraceni who took the main room a knotch higher with loud, rolling beats. His stand out moment for me and the crowd was his new release on Snatch! Records, ‘Bass Culture’ resonating through the dancefloor, really pushing the terrace’s flipside sound system, which sounded fantastic.
With Green Velvet’s slot drawing ever closer, I popped into room 2 to check out Othon’s set. It is safe to say he lived up to the hype with his eclectic twist of electronica and percussive techno, I could really see his experience as a composer and musician shining through his set.
With a few minutes to spare before Green Velvet I made my way back into the main room and the vibe was electric. Green Velvet played an energetic set, dropping all his classics along the way. The energy in the room as he performed his trademark vocals over his hit tracks such as La La Land and Flash was amazing to witness live. To see the crowd re-act the way they did to a DJ ive admired and followed for quite some time was a spectacle.
Closing the night was founder and the brains behind Sabajq, the man himself, Warboy who closed the main room with pumping techno, carrying on from the energy of green velvet and not once did the mood drop. The room was packed fro opening to closing with huge tracks such as Warboy’s ‘delusional’ featuring Flash McLightning shaking the dancefloor.
I left Egg on Monday morning more than satisfied after my fix of techno and look forward to the next instalment of Sabajaq. Thanks to Warboy for such a pure stripped back night of no frills techno.
