Program Records has followed up its critically acclaimed ‘Programmed’ EP with the second edition in the series, ‘Programmed V 2.0’, released today.
The label, a sub-division of Ram Records, launched last year as part of its double decade celebrations, has curated four tracks for ‘Programmed V 2.0’, all of which come from what they consider to be “some of the most talented and creative producers in the global drum & bass game.”
Italian Maztek kicks off proceedings with ‘Dizzy Step’, a bass-led cut complete with suitably heavy percussion and a build-up that’s epic even by his standards. Maztek is celebrating his most successful year so far and this track provides ample evidence of why he is in such high demand at the moment.
On track 2, Program introduces an emerging Russian talent in the form of Moscow resident, Traffic, who delivers a tight and energetic arrangement, appropriately entitled ‘Structures’. In this peak time number, a wildly dynamic bassline combines with supernatural pads and powerful drums for a notably dark and moody workout.
Sticking with the Federation for track 3, EastColors brings us ‘Crispy’ feat. Noel – a record that lives up to its name with razor sharp hi-hats and tight, pinpoint kick drums, helping to keep in check a playful, unpredictable bassline that heaves back and forth. The result is a high-voltage groove that relents only for brief interludes, allowing for a breather with glassy pads and futuristic FX.
The tried and tested partnership of Stealth and Altair provide the EP’s final flourish. Starting out with a beatless intro of chilled-out pads, rich strings and effected guitar chords, they drop in some laid-back percussion and a soulful vocal, before the mood completely switches as a gritty bassline arrives unannounced – and with a vengeance.
“Its time,” says the label, “to get with the program.”
